Founded in 1868 after the Civil War to provide education to freedmen, Hampton University is an Historically Black College and University on the Virginia Peninsula. Hampton is home to eight undergraduate colleges conferring bachelor’s degrees and certificates. Once every year during Black History Month, HU hosts an annual Black History Extravaganza celebration featuring musical and dramatic performances. Sometimes referred to as the “Home by the Sea,” HU is surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay and is located near attractions such as the NASA Langley Research Center and the Virginia Air and Space Center.
